City of Philadelphia Hosts a NACTO Workshop on Managing Inter-city Bus Operations
November 7, 2011
On Friday, the Mayor’s Office of Transportation and Utilities (MOTU) and the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) hosted a one-day workshop with participants from around the U.S. to discuss how to best manage the explosive growth curbside bus operators. These operations, including Bolt and Megabus, and many “Chinatown” services, have been seeing tremendous growth. While greatly increasing affordable travel options in a very environmentally friendly way, the operations have also resulted in a host of negative impacts to local neighbors of stop locations. The workshop – which included participants from New York, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Minneapolis, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Boston – permitted cities with curbside operators to compare issues, practices and strategies to better managing these operations. Findings of the meeting will be published by NACTO in the next several months.
